Royal Caribbean: Thousands of cruise passengers affected by flight cancellations

CELEBRITY CRUISE : ROYAL CARIBBEAN

Just how much has the shutdown of airports across the U.K., Ireland and northern Europe in recent days affected cruise lines?

The parent company of Royal Caribbean, Celebrity Cruises and Azamara Club Cruises says in a statement that about 6% of customers trying to reach ships since Thursday have been impacted — a percentage that translates into thousands of people.

The company says customers booked on a fly/cruise package directly with one of the three brands who have been unable to join their sailings since the crisis began are being offered alternative travel arrangements to join the ship mid-cruise, if possible. If that cannot be achieved, passengers are being offered a full refund of their cruise fare in the form of a future cruise credit or an alternative fly/cruise.

The company says fly/cruise passengers who booked with a tour operator and not directly with one of the brands should contact the tour operator.  The company says it also will work with cruise-only passengers who did not book as part of a package to file a claim with their travel insurance company.

“Whenever possible, Royal Caribbean Cruises Ltd. is making every effort to assist cruise-only guests with the information and services they require,” the company says.

Additional assistance to affected passengers include offering day-room hotel accommodation, assistance booking hotel accommodation, and dedicated help desks in hotels and airports in impacted destinations, the company adds.

Royal Caribbean to Provide Cellular Service at Sea from Wireless Maritime Services

Miramar, FL – Wireless Maritime Services (WMS), the world leader in providing cellular service to the cruise line industry, announced today that they have signed a new five year contract to continue providing cellular at sea wireless service to guests and crew members on all ships from Royal Caribbean Cruises, Ltd. and Celebrity Cruises. New ships entering the fleets are also included under this agreement.

WMS service allows both Royal Caribbean and Celebrity cruise line guests and crew members, with a qualified plan, to use their cell phones as they currently do on land while the ship is at sea away from land based cellular phone service. Connectivity is activated when each ship leaves port and turned off when in range of land-based providers. WMS is providing uninterrupted service to guests so they can stay in touch with family, friends or business associates back home while they enjoy the experiences of their cruise. Guests can make and receive calls, send text messages and surf the internet at rates similar to roaming internationally.

“We are excited about the new contract with WMS, both for the existing fleet and for new ships planned in the upcoming years,” said Royal Caribbean’s Director of Hotel Technology, Patrick Manuel. “As the world has changed, we saw the need to allow the guests and crew to stay connected, in a convenient way, to those back home. The signing of the new contract signals our recognition of the commitment WMS has shown for both service and support.”

“We are very excited to have grown the depth and breadth of our relationship with Royal Caribbean and Celebrity,” said Leighton Carroll, President and CEO of WMS. “We pride ourselves on delivering the best products and services to our customers, and this renewal is an indication of the value we bring to cruise line passengers and crew. Royal Caribbean International is a terrific company and we are very proud to have them as our customer.”

Royal Caribbean Cruises Ltd. and its subsidiary lines Celebrity Cruises and Azamara Cruises announced a deal with Florida Attorney General Bill McCollum whereby the cruise lines will refund $21 million worth of fuel surcharges that they levied on cruise passengers. Royal Caribbean says this affects an estimated 300,000 bookings.

Royal Caribbean, Celebrity, and Azamara customers who have already sailed and were retroactively charged the fuel fee will get full refunds. The surcharges added on average an additional $70 per person to the cost of a cruise. Royal Caribbean says customers who were retroactively charged but have not yet sailed will get their refunds as on-board spending credits. According to the new agreement with the Florida Attorney General’s office, Royal Caribbean will ensure that future surcharges are disclosed to customers in “clear and conspicuous̶1; terms.
The Florida Attorney General’s office opened the investigations after most of the major cruise lines announced late last year plans to add extra charges to help absorb skyrocketing fuel bills. In many cases, travelers who had already paid for their trips or paid deposits have been forced to pay the surcharges.

“Royal Caribbean and Celebrity Cruises are the first cruise lines to step forward and take actions to resolve this matter in their customers’ best interest,” says Attorney General McCollum. He adds, “This resolution will serve as a model for the rest of the cruise line industry and I expect the other companies to take this example and folloW
